Chic vs. Geek: Did you feel that?

When you’re looking for a home anywhere in California, it’s important to know what’s below the surface — and we’re not talking about the crawl space this time!

CHIC (PEARL)

This week, we took a trip to Stonebrae Country Club in the Hayward Hills to play a little golf with some clients and help them look for a new, more spacious home. The house we found was beautiful – just under 3,000 sqft with luxurious contemporary design. We were all amazed by the space, condition, and brightness of the home. But as we toured the area, we realized the entire gated community at Stonebrae sits right on top of the Hayward fault line. Anyone from California knows that means extra costs for earthquake insurance and other safety concerns.

GEEK (KEVIN)

If there’s one thing I wouldn’t mess with when looking for a new home in California, it’s earthquakes. As you probably hear all the time, many faults in the Bay Area and the state as a whole are WAY overdue for a major temblor. Here are two things you can do right now to make sure you’re ready for The Big One:

  1. Secure household belongings to keep them from tumbling over in a quake.

  2. Sign up for the CEA-backed Earthquake Brace + Bolt program, which provides eligible homeowners with $3,000 in grants to offset the costs of seismic home retrofits.
